QWSTION + ECAL
A QUESTION OF CONTEXT
In a joint design collaboration with internationally renowned university of art & design ECAL in Lausanne, we invited students of the MA Product Design programme to explore our new weather-proof and organic CottonShell® fabric by developing innovative carrying devices. Ten prototypes were selected for an exhibition at QWSTION Store Vienna in October 2017, as part of Vienna Design Week.
The project has resulted in new ideas and concepts beyond the ordinary: a scarf with hidden pockets aims to challenge airline staff, a new method of protecting contents inspired by bubblewrap makes for minimal carry, and a backpack with integrated rain coat tackles unpleasant weather surprises.
CottonShell® is a lightweight and water-resistant fabric we use for our All Weather Coat. Created by textile development studio D.N.S., the high-density fabric doesn’t require any coating. Made from responsibly sourced organic cotton, it is produced in Japan.
Questioning the norm by using straightforward materials and integrating functionality in casual ways, the students not only translated unique textile properties into directional carrying solutions, but also put the core brand values of QWSTION into a new context.
"A good answer is the result of the right question. I think it’s a really important part of studying to keep questioning the status quo, especially in relation to society and technology", QWSTION creative director Christian Paul Kaegi, who led the project, states.
