JUERGEN, STORE MANAGER
AT MAGAZIN IN MUNICH
(INCLUDING A QWSTION GALLERY)
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO TAKE ON THE CHALLENGE OF MANAGING THE STORE?
The well-designed and well-made products that make up MAGAZIN’s portfolio have always inspired me in terms of their functionality, quality and materiality. My view of the so-called ‘design market’ has become much more focused in recent years. Not only do we offer brands, we also go in our own direction with MAGAZIN products. We generally take up the drafts of product designers, develop them together to production readiness, and have them produced within a network of mostly small companies. This results in products with a high utility value, made with high quality workmanship from proven or new materials.
CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE STORE LOCATION / SPACE AND ITS HISTORY?
Since 2006, MAGAZIN has been located in the 'Fünf Höfe' (Five Courtyards) in downtown Munich, designed by Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron on a 600 square meter plot. The plan for the redesign of the entire block marked the architects’ first international competition success. The Prannerpassage’s walls and ceiling were designed by the Mayer'schen Hofkunstanstalt to feature 317 m² of glass sequin mosaics made of round-cut clear window glass, which are inserted into the grey exposed concrete to create a glittering effect.
WHAT ARE SOME OF YOUR DAILY CHALLENGES?
To set my daily business priorities in such a way that my personal passion and curiosity remain present.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR CUSTOMERS? WHAT ARE THEY LOOKING FOR?
Many of our customers work in the creative industries, are interested in well-designed products, and appreciate our clear and reliable selection – fishing rods instead of trawls, so to speak. New customers can expect to be inspired by new designs and materials, and to be well-informed.
WHAT WAS YOUR FIRST ENCOUNTER WITH A BAG OF OURS?
It was actually on a business trip to Zurich, during which we visited our longstanding bag supplier. I had some time to explore shops, and discovered QWSTION for myself. Materiality, functionality and simple design – I was thrilled! Our product researchers independently agreed. Ever since then, we’ve been growing together with QWSTION.
