After several years of research with the goal to develop alternatives to plastic textiles commonly used to make bags, we recently launched the plant based technical material Bananatex®. This waterproof and durable fabric is made from sustainably grown banana plant fibres and is fully biodegradable.

For the launch of our material, we designed two new bags with a radical approach towards material consumption and construction – now we’re expanding this idea into a real collection of different volumes and colorways: the Bananatex® Minimal Collection. The Hip Pouch, Zip Pack and Roll Pack are all based on the same concept of minimalistic aesthetics, minimal waste and maximum sustainability.

Since the beginning of QWSTION in 2008 we’ve been exploring ways to use renewable resources for making bags – ones which are just as functional as they are sustainable. We always wanted to make sustainability accessible rather than making it a luxury thing, and this is where we’ve found our biggest challenge. As long as we have a linear economy in which businesses do not have an obligation to take care of the waste they create, goods that are sustainably made will have a significantly higher price tag.

Our approach to this issue is to minimize waste while maximizing efficiency, and to create minimalistic products with maximum durability – all resulting in affordable and timeless pieces with the highest sustainability we can achieve today.

The learnings we’ve made through our research and experimentation are continuing to shape the direction of QWSTION on our journey into the future. With the new Minimal Collection we are more than doubling our product offering made with this radical approach. It consists of three different volumes: the small Hip Pouch, the medium sized Zip Pack, and the Roll Pack which can expand to a proper travel size of 25L.

All designs are based upon the characteristics of the Bananatex® material, with patterns designed to minimize waste in the cutting process of the individual parts. At the end of the bags’ lifecycles, their fabric is 100 % biodegradable, and their buckles and zippers can be recycled. Maximum sustainability combined with the versatility needed in everyday life is the essence of this collection.

The Roll Pack is based on the concept of a protective container that can adapt to its content thanks to a flexible roll top closure. The large, expandable main body contains multiple inner compartments, including a Merino felt-lined sleeve which fits up to 15“ MacBook Pro®, protecting contents from water and impact. A YKK® metal zipper with a unique cotton- instead of the usual plastic tape allows direct access to the main compartment via side entry, and the layout of small interior pockets is arranged to give frequently used items a practical spot. Adjustable backpack straps and a modular handle provide versatile carrying options.

The Hip Pouch is a small weather proof bag for your essentials. Adjustable hip and shoulder carry options adapt to your mood, and two inner compartments allow for the safe storage of your most important things. Its main compartment fastens with a YKK® metal zipper with cotton tape, that allows for quick access when needed.

Based on a balanced medium size, this work backpack has just the right amount of space for your everyday essentials. The shape shifting and water resistant main body can lean towards a tote bag or take on the look of a more square backpack. Small and medium sized inside pockets, plus a Merino felt-lined sleeve which fits up to 15“ MacBook Pro® help to organize content. The special YKK® metal zippers with cotton- instead of the usual plastic tape allow direct top- aswell as side-access to the main compartment, while keeping frequently used items accessible. The modular handle and adjustable backpack straps provide versatile carrying options.
