OUR CONNECTION TO MIRA
Our friends Stefan and Patrick, the Berlin-based founders of footwear label VELT, recently connected us with their friend DJ Mira, one of the most respected DJs in Berlin’s infamous club scene. Turns out she’s also one of the top few that gets booked all around the world – and the bag that’s accompanied her all over is our classic Daypack. Naturally, we wanted to get to know her and hear her thoughts.

The multifunctional bag is pretty perfect for my needs. All the little extra pockets have room for chargers, cables, passport, phone, headphones… I have an extra laptop compartment and enough room for my book, a water bottle, some food – I could even stay overnight just using the daypack.

WHAT LED YOU TO WHAT YOU DO TODAY?
I never had a proper master plan for my life, but I was always passionate about music and dancing. I grew up around artists: my mother, a trained photographer, my father, a musician – and lots of their artists friends who would frequently come and visit: a perfect combination and environment to find my own musical abilities. I started with piano lessons, ballet and singing in a choir in my childhood and eventually ended up hanging out in a record store to grab the copies of my favorite electronic music in the mid ’90s. By that time, a bunch of friends and I would drive to Berlin to go clubbing almost every weekend.

Spinning records became more than a hobby very quickly. I started to organise my own events in Halle/Saale and Leipzig for several years, and invited my favourite artists. I always enjoyed to make them known to a wider audience in the Eastern part of Germany. After I moved to Berlin 15 years ago, I had to restart a bit since I was pretty unknown in the scene here. I became a resident in Bar 25, Kater Holzig and now Kater Blau, and over the years I managed to build an international audience for my DJ gigs as well as my events.

WHAT DO YOU CARE ABOUT IN LIFE?
I care about my family and friends, and my cat. Having people who truly matter to you is extremely important in my job. Besides that, taking some time off to breathe in nature, riding my bike through my beloved city to explore, reading a good book on a train, traveling to new countries to find places I haven’t yet discovered – eating local food, discovering new music, drinking good coffee... and probably the most important: being able to share these things.

HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THESE WITH YOUR WORK?
How can I answer this without sounding trite? My music and track selection is, of course, inspired by personal experiences—sometimes intentionally, and other times more intuitively. If I record a podcast at home, I usually spend days trying to find the right ‘language’ to explain how I feel at the moment. It’s storytelling. Playing live is, too, but in this case, the story is written on either side of the decks.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN THE THINGS YOU BUY?
I prefer to shop vintage. If it’s not vintage, it has to meet a very high standard of quality and be long lasting and sustainable. And of course I tend to curate the stuff I buy pretty excessively.
