MEET / QWSTION CRITIC

FRANZ GRÜNEWALD,
PHOTOGRAPHER

Berlin photographer Franz Grünewald weighs in on the Backpack in Organic Jet Black as a modified pro camera bag.

I’ve received compliments from all sorts of people – aesthetically speaking, it’s worlds away from a classic photo backpack!

"Please make a camera bag,” is a request we hear on high rotation – and one to which we’re happy to reply: We’re working on it! To that end, in 2019 we enlisted the expertise of photographer extraordinaire Franz Grünewald, who visited QWSTION Store Zurich pre-pandemic on behalf of Ignant Production to snap the store for a city guide. He didn’t leave the shop floor without a Backpack in Organic Jet Black in tow, and having kitted it out with a Peak Design Camera Cube divider, he’s used it to carry his precious photographic equipment ever since.

So, does the Backpack have pro camera bag potential? For Franz, it’s a yes. Watch this space as we iterate on his constructive feedback.

WHAT LED YOU TO WHAT YOU DO TODAY?
Photography has been part of my life since my youth. In the small German town where I grew up, I photographed people almost every day during my school years. I never really let go of the craft, and over the years a certain "aesthetic maturity" evolved – purely through practice – which has allowed me to develop an ever-clearer picture of how I want to work.

WHAT DO YOU CARE ABOUT IN LIFE?
Listening to people and being helpful, finding and appreciating beauty in the everyday, good music, and – of course – photography.

HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THESE WITH YOUR WORK?
In my photographic work, I am primarily interested in conveying emotions. Often, they are subtle and quiet images that I can identify with, and want to share. I want my photography to be kind, in the best sense of the word.

With portraits, I'm always looking for the little in-between moments. It's incredibly important to me that the process of photographing is enjoyable, especially for the person portrayed. When it comes to details and still lifes, I'm more concerned with seeking what’s aesthetically fascinating to me. In series and reportages, all photographic disciplines come together, which I find particularly appealing. In the process, I enjoy spending time (often hours) on image selection, sequence and dramaturgy, in order to combine my shots in the most interesting way possible.

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN THE THINGS YOU BUY?
I really rarely buy new things; the act of purchasing is low down on the list of things I enjoy. In saying that, there are certain objects that I’m happy to have as they’re faithful to me in their high quality, durability and sustainability. In doing so, they improve my everyday.
