OUR CONNECTION TO SCMP DESIGN OFFICE

QWSTION designer Paolo first encountered Sébastien Cluzel of SCMP Design Office while assisting for the Industrial Design BA at ÉCAL. Their shared curiosity for new materials, experimentation – and tent stakes! – led them to build up a common collection of found objects. In 2015, Sébastien and his wife, Morgane Pluchon, founded SCMP in Paris. Similarly to QWSTION, the studio has become known for reinterpreting everyday objects – like the Dorval pendant light for Lambert & Fils or the Galta bistro chair for Kann Design.

As product designers themselves, Morgane and Sébastien are highly discerning when it comes to the rigour of an everyday object. So we were eager to hear their thoughts on our Bananatex Zip Pack in Natural White, and our Roll Pack in Classic Navy respectively. “The feeling we have with a product is the main thing that we are looking for,” was the response we got, “And this first feeling is mainly drive by its function, its practicality, its quality, and its aesthetic.”

Applied to their bags, “The very first thing I checked was how to move the leather handle for the top to the side – and the side zip access to the pocket,” said Sébastien. “We found these details really well-though and well-designed.” Morgane, having chosen a light shade, added: “As we are planning to use our bags in all conditions and seasons, I was a bit scared of getting it dirty, but that hasn’t happened. So far so good. Just waiting fall to see how it will react to heavy rain.” Her suggestion: “What about adding coating at the bottom?”

WHAT LED YOU TO WHAT YOU DO TODAY?

When I was little, I read the adventures of the “Passiflore family”. I remember the magical illustrations that featured the house of a family of rabbits. Each element of the layout was designed around the shape of a rabbit or carrot. It was enchanting and it made me realize that there are so many ways to imagine everyday life!

Sébastien: My father and my grandfather were carpenters by trade. Curious to learn, I spent my childhood in workshops trying out machines and tinkering with all kinds of things with pieces of wood. This is how, very naturally, I turned to the design and production of furniture.

WHAT DO YOU CARE ABOUT IN LIFE?
With the hectic pace of our society, we’re trying to make the most of every moment. And using well-designed products is really helping us to enjoy life.

HOW DO YOU ADDRESS THIS WITH YOUR WORK?
When we are working on a product, the goal is to put the human/user in the center of the subject and we are always asking ourselves few questions like: How people will use it? Is the function easily understandable? Etc..

WHAT DO YOU LOOK FOR IN THE THINGS YOU BUY?

The feeling we have with a product is the main thing that we are looking for. And this first feeling is mainly drive by its function, its practicality, its quality & its aesthetic for sure.
